Head Coach: Alexia Heist
Prior to the season starting, I knew that I wanted to approach coaching with a different style and mindset. Prior to every practice, we would huddle up for the first 20-30 minutes to talk about a chapter of a book that we were reading as a team (Chop Wood Carry Water). We would discuss the chapter, I would talk about how that topic has personally impacted me, we would have an open discussion as a team, and then we would end with a meditation/visualization to clear our minds prior to practice.
By the end of the season, the girls had a complete understanding of how their mind and thoughts impacted their play, they learned how to breathe and how to visualize themselves playing great volleyball, they were asking to visualize and breathe before they played, they learned and reaped the benefits of learning how to journal consistently, and by the end of the season they were able to walk themselves through a visualization.
By combining solid mechanics and lesson plans with Mind Training + Mindfulness every practice, each player was able to improve not only in their technique and volleyball IQ, but their mind became stronger, too, making them a better athlete and a better person.
